Weeknotes 305 - embodying and embracing applied intelligence

A short weeknotes edition, with some thoughts on the play of Apple Intelligence.

Weeknotes 305 - embodying and embracing applied intelligence
Interpretation by Midjourney

Hi, y’all! After an inspiring ThingsCon Salon last week, I started a vacation, traveling for three weeks. So, the first complete newsletter you can expect is on the 1st of October. But maybe I might make short versions like this :-)

Triggered thought

I could not refuse to watch the Apple keynote. In the introductions on the hardware, no big surprises (it might be the first time to consider a new Apple Watch), maybe even more in combination with the hardware, it was a confirmation that Apple Intelligence is first and foremost applied intelligence or, even better, “embodied intelligence”. Reading between the lines is always important with these Apple keynotes. Not only to see how Visual intelligence is doing the same (and trying to make them redundant right away) as the AI devices like Humane, Rabbit and specifically Meta Rayban glasses.

The iPhone is becoming a camera-based sensor even more than ever. Changing the role of visual capturing from just pictures to enhanced seeing and interface the machine intelligence. The new camera control linked to the new capture button might be a strong leverage for buying a new phone in combination with the adaptive controls, linking also applied intelligence to the complete software-hardware symbiosis.

It is also part of the Airpods of course, even more built on embedded applied intelligence with ANC and adaptive modes. I am curious to experience that, as I am not a fan of the pro cushions fit.

So the roll-out Apple Intelligence might take longer than hoped, Applied intelligence is more mundane than ever, less catchy and marketable, but much more valuable in the end. Applied and assisting intelligence are the use cases for generative intelligence capabilities, at least according to Apple. And if rolled out right, it might be for all uses.

It might be nice to read back the thoughts on Apple Intelligence impact or inspiration on our use of digital, triggered by the earlier announcements at WWDC: “capitalizing embodied intelligence” and “apps as capabilities”.

For the subscribers or first-time readers (welcome!), thanks for joining! A short general intro: I am Iskander Smit, educated as an industrial design engineer, and have worked in digital technology all my life, with a particular interest in digital-physical interactions and a focus on human-tech intelligence co-performance. I like to (critically) explore the near future in the context of cities of things. And organising ThingsCon. I call Target_is_New my practice for making sense of unpredictable futures in human-AI partnerships. That is the lens I use to capture interesting news and share a paper every week.

Notions from the news

I captured links last week and saved them to Notion. Normally, my main source is a walk-through of my good-old RSS reader (Readwise). So, this is just this short list, uncategorized and without any contextualizing.

Provenance for science papers, local-first access control
In this Dispatch, we’ll introduce you to two new projects at the lab: exploring writing environments for science papers and local-first access control. We also have some updates on WASM packaging for Automerge, and a new researcher-in-residence.

Looking forward

I will enjoy more cities, art, and brutalism in the coming weeks. Enjoy the coming weeks!
